AJC Test Drive

Quick, smooth Audi TT roadster packs va-va-va-voom

Cox News Service

February 8, 2007

The Audi TT roadster, a sexy, fun-to-drive car, has undergone a few subtle changes for the 2008 model year.

The result?

A sexier, more fun-to-drive car.

Full list

We tested the TT coupe a few months ago and enjoyed that -- but found the roadster, which has just two seats, to be even more enjoyable.

Its convertible roof opens and closes in just 12 seconds. Audi's designers are to be complimented for their skill in devising such sinewy lines for this car. The overall design is smooth, with aggressive undertones.

The interior fit and finish is superb, and you'd be hard-pressed to find a more comfortable roadster.

The TT has been enlarged a bit. The adjustable driver's seat gives you plenty of positioning options so that you'll be sure to find one that suits you.

After driving or riding in the TT, you'll feel as if you've been in a sedan, rather than a matchbox-size roadster.

As for performance, the Magnetic Ride system is a touch of engineering brilliance, allowing you, at the push of a button, to switch into sport mode for some really spirited driving.

The ride has been made to be more rigid than in the past.

The six-speed S-tronic transmission shifts quickly and smoothly, which also energizes your driving experience.

Audi's 3.2-liter six-cylinder engine makes 250 horsepower and 236 pounds-feet of torque.

A 2.0T four-cylinder is also available.

January in Atlanta, when we had the test drive car, is usually on the cool side, but this January was downright cold and damp. So we didn't do too much driving with the top down.

But it was clear that in better conditions, a ride in the TT roadster with nothing overhead but the skies is a little slice of heaven.

The price is $54,625.
