Michael Dell vs. Steve Jobs: Let’s get ready to rumble…

Boxing gloves

The best moment of Michael Dell’s appearance at D: All Things Digital might be this classic tidbit from Engadget.com.

During the audience Q&A, Engadget reports, someone asked Dell if he could take Steve Jobs in a fight. Dell’s response: “Yeah, I could take him.”

Having seen both men standing side-by-side, I can say the size advantage clearly goes to Dell. But then you never know what sort of Zen mastery Jobs might have lurking up those black-turtleneck sleeves.

I think I’d have to put my money on Dell — just can’t discount a Texas boy’s toughness.

Dell’s punches would be boring — simple jabs. And none would work. Dell would sweat his clothest through. Jobs’s punches would be completely unexpected and nearly always successful. He’d rarely sweat. And the way he fought would make everyone wonder why everyone doesn’t fight like that.

Michael Dell wouldn’t fight Steve Jobs - he would outsource the fight to someone in India.

“Yeah, I could take him.” Well, why not take him on where it matters? Like in the big ring of the marketplace. Try innovating something new again Mikey instead of spouting false machismo? Yes, you were great once long ago with supply chain optimization, you chumped Apple good. But since then, they’ve done iPod and now iPhone. C’mon champ, show us what you’re made of! Or STFU.

“Try innovating something new again Mikey … ” They have never innovated anything except beating suppliers down on cheap components.

Steve Jobs would surprise Dell with a knock out move but Dell would duplicate it within a 12 to 19 month time span. He would then have 9 ad agencies market the move in 9 segment levels with an exciting corporate culture name that 30 to 43 year old MBA’s found fresh and exciting.

A couple of years back when I was working for Apple, I went to Austin on a business trip. My colleagues and I went out to dinner, and the table next to us was a group of Dell employees. They apparently noticed our Apple staff shirts, and they were dead quiet, hanging on our every word throughout the meal.

I wonder what they thought they could learn?
