Graffiti dreams part VI
The latest edition of Graffiti dreams goes beyond the official limits of Mexico City and into the sprawling, hardscrabble suburb of Ecatepec. While Ecatepec is characterized by miles of tightly grouped concrete homes that make it look like a subdivision on steroids, the city’s center is a vibrant place, with amazing murals and sculpture. It’s plaza is large and peaceful, belying the city’s image as a frenzied, traffic-choked mega-suburb. The graffiti here adorns a hip hop shop right off the main plaza, where you can find spray paint cans, jeans, CD’s and a booming stereo system. The first piece looks like none other than the late Notorious B.I.G., who is held in high esteem in many parts of Mexico.
The last picture is of some local street art in the provincial town of Tepic, the capital of Nayarit state. Tepic is about as slow-moving a capital as you will find in Mexico, and is not easy to reach, nestled near jungle-filled mountains along the Pacific coast. Sorry for the tree in the middle, but we had to snap from a fast-moving car.
