Heading to Morelia

morelia.JPG
Uncovering Mexico will be in Morelia this weekend, checking out the Morelia Film Festival. The event is taking on added significance this year, coming just two weeks after the Sept. 15 grenade attack in Morelia’s picturesque main plaza. Experts have signaled the attack as an escalation in the ongoing drug war to Colombia-like levels, and it likely represents the first narco attack on the general public (authorities have detained three “Zetas” in connection with the attack, but have already detained the wrong men once before).

In addition to reporting back on the movies at the festival (they include Steven Soderbergh’s “Che” epic and a slew of fascinating-looking documentaries) we’ll be gauging the city’s atmosphere and seeing if folks are still on edge. Morelia is one of Mexico’s most beautiful colonial capitals and the grenade attacks threaten to damage the city’s tourist trade. Hopefully things are heading towards normalcy.
