She sounds exactly like what we DON’T need; another reactionary luddite calling the shots for our schoolkids. Education should be a top priority and we cannot, for the sake of our children, afford to continue stacking the board with right-wing religious zealots, no matter how cute or bubbly their personalities might be. It’d be like electing a Sarah Palin to the state board of education. Get rid of her and McLeroy, and all the other conservative christian dictators that have turned Texas public education into the bottom of the heap laughing stock that it is. Education is about expanding the minds of our youth, not quashing knowledge because it doesn’t conform to the challenged belief system of a handful of very powerful people who hold the controls.

Bill Whitaker responds: Thanks for the note. I think the Trib editorial board would agree with some of your sentiments, Michael, but you’ve got to have a viable opponent first, and the Democrats didn’t really offer one this time. Mrs. Lowe clearly had a better grasp of education issues and was far more articulate in discussing them in detail, even when challenged.
