Playstation 3 or Playstation Too (Expensive)?

At this week’s Electronic Entertainment Expo in Los Angeles, Sony announced the suggested price of its new, highly anticipated PlayStation 3 console, expected for a November release. It’s a breathtaking $600 — some $200 more than the Xbox 360, whose price also raised eyebrows on its release. Much of that cost stems from its Blu-ray high-def DVD technology and it looks like Sony is positioning its famous gaming console as a key component in a home entertainment center (ability to play high-capacity Blu-ray DVDs, high def TV outputs, 60G hard drive for downloading games and video). As sexy as a PlayStation 3 would be, that’s a new dishwasher, a low-end HDTV set, a third of a new MacBook laptop or the summer’s electric bills (provided we bump up the thermostat and TXU opts not to raise rates again). I’m not an early adopter and at these prices, won’t be for awhile …
