Kurt Vonnegut - So it goes

Kurt Vonnegut died yesterday, a novelist whose books in the 1960s and 1970s shaped me as I went through junior and senior high. Slaughterhouse Five, his best work, played with time (its central character Billy Pilgrim becomes “unstuck in time” after witnessing the Allied firebombing of Dresden in World War II; its oft-repeated phrase “so it goes” flavors most of the obituaries I’ve seen). Welcome to the Monkey House and Cat’s Cradle worked in science fiction (anyone remember Ice-9?). Most of his fiction was funny, satirical and written in a clear, easy-to-read style, qualities I hope have shaped my writing over the years (Another literary influence: Hermann Hesse, who handled meatier, philosophical subjects, yet in a straight-forward style.)

I didn’t keep up with Vonnegut’s work much after college, I’m afraid. Still, news of his death was cause for reflection - and thanks.
