Weekend feedback?

A lot of stuff went on this weekend and no way to do it all. I caught the Waco symphony on Saturday night, but missed the Foghat/Blue Oyster Cult show. Rock bands Chevelle and Finger Eleven played here on Sunday night. The Waco Civic Theatre finished its run of “Steel Magnolias” over the weekend while the Waco Hippodrome Theatre had a family stage presentation of “Old Yeller.” The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band also was in Waco on Thursday at the Bosque River Stage.

Anyone who attended any of these over the weekend feel free to post your comments here so the rest of us can share vicariously. Win Emmons already has mentioned the “Steel Magnolias” run and I got an email from Foghat’s PR team that praised the venue (Zack & Jim’s Hog Creek Icehouse), said the show ran smoothly and that the band had a great time. For those of you in the crowd, was that your experience as well? It used to be that Waco weekends with more than one major concert/play/event was the exception, not the rule; now it’s more common than not, though usually when Baylor and MCC (and their thousands of students) are in session.

Had a great time at the Foghat/Blue Oyster Cult Concert. Zack & Jim’s Hog Creek Ice House did a great job with the venue, the weather turned out perfect and the crowd was large. John Epperson & Drivin’ Blind would like to say THANK YOU to Waco & Zack & Jim’s Hog Creek Ice House and all our fans. We had a great time and appreciate everyone for the turn out!

Old Yeller went great. It was good to see so many parents and grandparents coming to the theatre with their kids. They all enjoyed the show and we announced our Family Series for next year that will feature Annie, The Seussical, and The Spencer’s Theatre of Illusion among other shows. We’re excited to offer an opportunity for families to enjoy live theatre together and to give parents the opportunity to raise a generation of theatre-goers.

Nitty Gritty Dirt Band was a great show. Was a greatest hits collection. After playing together for 40+ years, some parts did seem like they were going through the motions, particularly some of the between-song jokes (John McEuen’s one-liners on his web site made their way into the show, suggesting quite a few fans have heard them around the world). McEuen also reached, and I emphasize reached, for the lowest common denominator with a Wacko comment, then at least admitted that everyone must make it and apologized. Genteel Waco sighed but didn’t boo.

Musically, the guys were the masters that four decades of performing had allowed them to be. Good crowd - though not as big as the Hank Thompson/Johnny Gimble show last year. Crowd was still mostly over 40.

They did meet-and-greet after the show with all comers and were all very personable and welcoming save McEuen, who seemed a little more uneasy with meeting new people, but he obliged those who approached him.

All the expected songs were played with a few that hadn’t seen as much chart action. Weather was perfect and was really surprised, given the venue, that they made not one comment about it being the perfect place to do “Fishin’ in the Dark.”

Bob Carpenter commented that he thought it was their best show of the year so far. (Course it was only March.)
