Movie alert - Film tsunami ahead
By Carl Hoover
| Tuesday, September 30, 2008, 01:42 PM
As if this weekend didn’t have enough things to do or watch - the HOT Fair and Rodeo, the OU-Baylor football game, two plays opening, four or so notable concerts and benefits, a nationally broadcast vice-presidential debate - here comes the list of movies opening this Friday in Waco and I count seven movies opening.
That’s right. Seven movies.
They are: Appaloosa, Beverly Hills Chihuahua, Blindness, Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist, Flash of Genius, American Carol and How to Lose Friends and Alienate People.
Needless to say, some will not be left standing by next Friday, so use the Waco rule of thumb: If there’s an art or indie movie that you really, really want to see, catch it in its first week in Waco; after one week they live on borrowed time …

Carl,
Is “Religulous” a possibility for Waco or will it pass us by?

Bill Maher’s look at the follies of religions (as well as the folly of religion) opens nationally on Friday, too, but not in Waco. It’s a Lionsgate film, which we’ve received in the past (Bangkok Dangerous, Tyler Perry’s The Family That Preys Together and My Best Friend’s Girl), though not all Lionsgate films (The Lucky Ones).
I’m guessing that the out-of-town bookers for Hollywood Jewel and Starplex Galaxy saw seven films opening in Waco and decided to pass (for now) on what could be a controversial, or perhaps worse, poorly attended film. The Christian-themed Fireproof, after all, is presently playing in Waco and would draw an audience at odds with Maher’s view of religion.
Religulous opens in Austin this weekend, but with a lot of movies on the release schedule between now and the holidays, I would be surprised to see it come to Waco a week or two after its national opening. I’ve been surprised in the past, though …

Mahr has become such an over the top, hater type of commentator that he’s embarrassing to even the most liberal minded in America. There was a time when he was funny and somewhat engaging, but I think as the field of late night talk shows has grown he has felt that he needed to go up to and over the edge. At least that logic would be giving him the benefit of the doubt.
