Double helping of opera for Waco
By Carl Hoover

Saturday and Tuesday will offer events with area opera fans in mind.
On Saturday, Oct. 11, the Hollywood Jewel 16 cinemas will screen the latest in the “The Met: Live in HD” digital broadcast series, the Richard Strauss opera “Salome” featuring soprano Karita Mattila at noon. Tickets cost $22 for adults, $20 for senior adults, $18 for students and $15 for children. And although the theater’s recorded message advertises it as “Salome with Richard Strauss,” I can tell you confidently Richard won’t be there. He died in 1949.
Tuesday night, Oct. 14, will feature the Waco Community Band and the McLennan Community College Wind Symphony collaborating with soprano Lise Uhl and tenor Edgar Sierra in “A Night at the Opera.” They’ll play (and sing) selections from Puccini’s “Turandot,” “Tosca,” “Gianni Schicchi” and “Madame Butterfly,” Rossini’s “The Barber of Seville,” Wagner’s “Lohengrin,” Bizet’s “Carmen” and more. It’s free and very much alive.

My earlier post had the wrong date. It’s Tuesday night, not Monday, that’s the “Night at the Opera.” Those who show up Monday, however, can attend the MCC Chorale concert that night.
