Mercedes-Benz R320 CDI

Cox News Service

November 3,2006

Is diesel, which promises more miles per gallon, the answer to America's longstanding worry about the price of driving? Mercedes-Benz hopes you'll consider that notion, rolling out the R320 CDI and two other diesel-powered SUVs in a bid to get a leg up on a possibly resurgent market.

ABOUT THE MERCEDES-BENZ R320 CDI:

Body style: Crossover SUV

Trim lines: Standard

Price: $44,775

Drive: Four-wheel

Seating: Two in front, two in middle, two in rear

Engine: V-6

Transmission: Seven-speed automatic

Miles per gallon of fuel: EPA estimate 21 city / 28 highway

WHAT'S SPECIAL: The R320 is in the popular crossover segment, and Mercedes calls it the first clean diesel sports tourer. This vehicle promises good fuel economy with no sacrifice in performance, and it delivers. It also offers versatility and roominess. And, since it's a Mercedes, you know it has a flair for luxury.

WHAT WE LIKE: One key reason crossovers have become so popular is because of their carlike ride, and the R320 exemplifies that. It handles superbly while presenting a strong road presence. Plus, it offers impressive versatility.

WHAT ISN'T THERE: The stereotypical traits of diesel vehicles -- that they stink, perform poorly, and are loud and shaky -- aren't found here. Mercedes is going out of its way to try to make that clear with consumers.

YOU OUGHTA KNOW: Mercedes is using CDI (Common-rail Direct Injection) technology in its diesel engines, with the aim of cutting exhaust particulates, hydrocarbons and carbon monoxide levels. The company says the technology produces up to 30 percent better fuel economy than comparable gasoline engines. Mercedes uses Bluetec technology in some of its other diesels.

EXTRAS: One neat feature about the R320 is the third row of seating, which can actually accommodate a real-size adult. All seat positions have cup holders, seat adjustments and vents, making this a really comfortable vehicle. Another enjoyable feature is the panorama sunroof. After halting U.S. diesel sales from 1999 to 2005, Mercedes hopes this new lineup will reignite interest in the category.

AND ANOTHER THING: Mercedes is aiming the R320 at affluent baby boomers with late-forming families who are "influenced heavily by style and design."
