A man, who allegedly set a woman's mobile home on fire has been indicted by a Harrison County grand jury for arson.
Indicted was 69-year-old Woodrow Charles Smith. According to the probable cause for arrest report, on Jan. 4, 2010, an officer responded to a residence in the 100 block of Milton Lane in reference to a house fire. Upon arrival, the occupant of the residence said Smith attempted to burn her house down.
She told the officer she was in her home when she smelled smoke coming from the rear of the house. When she opened the door, she saw a fire around her air conditioner and beneath her home, the report indicated. She said Smith was standing beside the fire, refusing to help her.
When questioned, Smith allegedly told the officer that he set the residence on fire at the request of his landlord. The report notes the officer spoke with the landlord who said Smith came to his home that morning, but could not comprehend what he wanted. The officer noted that while in the patrol car, taking Smith to the Harrison County Jail, the defendant said he set the house on fire because he believed the complainant stole his Social Security checks.
