Bragg, Cannon named to TSWA all-state first team

Two East Texans who are considered among the nation's best at their respective positions earned first-team honors on Collin Street Bakery/Texas Sports Writers Association Class 4A All-State Football Team, which was announced on Friday.
Nacogdoches center Jacob Bragg, who has signed to play at Kansas, and Mount Pleasant receiver K.D. Cannon both made the first team.
Bragg had 57 pancakes and graded at 87 percent for the season. Cannon caught 80 passes for 1,252 yards and 16 touchdowns.
The team was selected by TSWA members based on nominations from coaches and media members from around the state.
Quarterback Patrick Mahomes and receiver Jake Parker, both of Whitehouse, and center Landon Watkins and running back Willy Ivery, both from Sulphur Springs, all earned second-team honors, along with Nacogdoches defensive lineman Jacorey Whitaker.
Denton Guyer quarterback Jerrod Heard was the Offensive Player of the Year, and San Antonio Brennan linebacker Grant Watanabe was named the Defensive Player of the Year.
Heard, a Texas signee, threw for 2,148 yards and 22 touchdowns and rushed for another 2,172 yards and 28 touchdowns.
Watanabe, a Colorado signee, recorded 129 tackles, 12 for losses.
Aledo head coach Tim Buchanan was named the Coach of the Year after leading his team to a 16-0 record and the Class 4A, Division II title.
East Texans who earned honorable mention recognition were Pine Tree punter Dalvin Manns, Hallsville defensive back Jecori Crayton, Hallsville defensive lineman David Jackson, Sulphur Springs guard Jess Jenkins, Jacksonville quarterback Carter McCown, Sulphur Springs quarterback Larry Pryor, John Tyler all-purpose back Reginald Gipson, John Tyler kicker Jose Perez, John Tyler punter Luis Duran, John Tyler defensive back Terry Ausbourne, John Tyler kick returner Duntayvion Gross, Whitehouse linebacker Reggie Long, Whitehouse defensive back Nate Brooks and Nacogdoches defensive back/kick returner Brandon Jones.
