RICHARDSON: Many new buildings under way

Monday, November 16, 2009

Workers were busy this week working on new buildings like Classic Donuts and the Centennial Plaza on U.S. Highway 80. Work continues on First Baptist Church's balcony in the sanctuary. Different type of work centers on the new elementary school, and houses are again being built in the north part of Tealwood off Cypress.

The Cowboy Church has opened, as have the apartments on East Pine Street and the duplexes on North Chestnut across from the tennis courts.

Yes, you may have to wait a little longer at the red light. Don't blame Volney Hall when he had the town laid out in 1869. He didn't know we'd have this much traffic. At that time ,the main east-west road was a mile north of town.

In Topeka, Kan., after viewing the Capitol, we visited the Brown vs. Board of Education National Historical Site. It was at an old elementary school and gave the history of the famous civil rights case. We also visited the very interesting Kansas Museum of History. While my wife was "working out" at a Curves, I noticed we were real close to the Combat Air Museum. It showed military aviation from 1917 through Desert Storm.

I was hoping the Bobcats might make the payoffs, but Sulphur Springs had a pretty fair offense. They will play Lindale at Van. According to the last Bobcats football roster, we lose 17 seniors. We had 25 juniors on varsity, and many were starters. There were six sophomores with two starting, plus kicker Austin Lightle.

Cayden Ferrell \— the first freshman to start since Rodderick Muckelroy \— played half a season in 2001. Muckelroy (38) is doing well for Texas Longhorns this year. He leads in tackles.

The JV won only three games but has some good players. Who will help the larger class of seniors next year?

The ninth grade team went 6-2-1. They tied Kilgore, lost to Longview and lost 28-26 in the last seconds last Thursday to Sulphur Springs. They ran back a fumble. They didn't play Texas High \— not because I was in Kansas, but because of the weather I guess. Some have said this group of ninth graders could have several players on varsity in 2010. Are they good as the 1996 freshman \— Dillard, Doran, Z. Gideon and S. Brown?

Bobcat basketball coach Daryl Glegghorn will speak to the Lions Club on Monday night. He will share the program with Ladycat coach John Thompson. The Ladycats had a good opening with a 59-49 win over Lake Dallas.

Three veteran players \— McGuire, Berry and Perez \— led that team. With 1:17 left and the game getting closer, volleyball players Jackson and Graff went in.

Jay Bunt, 43, the middle son of former Bobcats Jerry and Janice Bunt, died Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. He was a 1984 Pine Tree graduate. He was a soccer player in high school and later was quite a slugger in softball. He graduated from Stephen F. Austin State University and worked in the sign business.

Jay found out he had cancer five months ago. He has an older brother, Jeff, and a younger brother, Jody, who has a 3-year-old boy and twin girls. Jerry and Janice kept them this weekend. Perry and Media Bunt were the grandparents.

Theo Chrisman, 83, died last weekend. He and Page married in 1966 and moved from Kentucky to Marshall. They bought the Arnold Bramlett house in 1977. It had been Tom Weidmer's land. Their son, Charles, started fifth grade at Hallsville.

Can you believe our biggest rival of the '40s and '50s \— the White Oak Roughnecks \— played Jefferson at Bobcat Stadium last night? Tonight state champion Daingerfield \— another former rival \— plays Hallsville's winningest coach, Roger Adams (43 wins) and his Notre Dame, uh, New Diana Eagles.

We will miss J.C. Derrick covering Hallsville sports.
