Fired Austin officer in Sanders case appealing
AUSTIN, Texas — An Austin officer fired after allegedly showing bias in a deadly police shooting is appealing.
Ex-Detective Chris Dunn denies showing favoritism in the internal affairs investigation of Officer Leonardo Quintana after the May shooting death of Nathaniel Sanders II.
Dunn attorney Tom Stribling says his client acknowledges his actions were unprofessional, but does not feel he deserves indefinite suspension.
Police Chief Art Acevedo fired Dunn on Nov. 5, saying Dunn repeatedly showed favoritism toward Quintana.
Quintana was suspended for 15 days for not turning on his patrol car camera in the time leading up to the shooting.
A grand jury in August declined to indict Quintana over the shooting of the armed suspect. Sanders had been sleeping in a car that police were investigating as possibly being used in some crimes.
