REEVES: Master Gardener signup opens

Monday, October 26, 2009

Registration for the 2010 Master Gardener class is open now through Thursday, Dec. 17. The Master Gardener program has been an active part of the Harrison County Extension program for many years.

The Master Gardener program teaches participants valuable gardening knowledge, including vegetable, fruit and landscape growing methods; insect and disease identification and management; landscape tree maintenance; plant propagation; and native plant use. Some great field trips are also planned.

One newly added feature in this class will be a session on composting and vermiculture with Dr. George Damoff. As in past years, we will also be offering the plant propagation session taught by our own Harrison County Master Gardeners.

Participants will be expected to volunteer 50 hours back to the program at the conclusion of the course to be certified as a Master Gardener. This feat is easy to do, especially with the active association that we have here in Harrison County.

Some of the project work the local association is involved with includes Habitat For Humanity, Marshall Visual Art Center and several evening class sessions on gardening for local residents in 2010.

For more information on the program, including the course agenda and registration form, stop by the Harrison County Extension office or visit http://harrison-co.tamu.edu/publications/10mgreg.pdf.

Annual Cattlemen's

Association meeting

This is just a reminder that the Harrison County Cattlemen's Association will be holding their annual meeting on Thursday, Nov. 12, in the Harrison County Extension office.

The guest speaker for the evening will be Dr. Billy Higginbotham, Extension wildlife and fisheries specialist from Overton. Billy's discussion will be "Feral hog control — What's legal and what's not." There will also be 1.5 credit hours toward any TDA pesticide license for participation in the program.

The program will start at 6 p.m. with supper prior to the presentation. The Bill Davis Award will also be presented that night to a well-deserving Harrison County beef and forage producer. Make plans to attend and become a part of the Harrison County Cattlemen's Association.
