GILMER \— Two men were recently sentenced in Upshur County's 115th District Court for offenses committed within the New Diana Independent School District, according to press releases.
John Cotcha Tiger was sentenced for improper relationship between educator and student and online solicitation of a minor, while Bobby Joe Crain was sentenced for delivery of marijuana in a drug free zone.
Both men were prosecuted by District Attorney Billy W. Byrd and entered guilty pleas Monday before District Judge Lauren Parish, who pronounced sentence.
Tiger received 15 years in the penitentiary for each of the second degree felonies, with the sentences to run concurrently. He was forced to surrender his teaching certificate and will be required to register as a sex offender.
At the time of the offense, Tiger was a teacher and coach at New Diana ISD, having taught previously in the Union Hill school district.
A Gilmer resident, Crain was sentenced to seven years in the penitentiary.
Upshur County Sheriff's Deputy Chad Lanier saw Crain as he was delivering more than a quarter ounce but less than five pounds of marijuana on the New Diana ISD premises.
Crain has a prior misdemeanor conviction from 2002 in Hardeman County and a prior state jail felony conviction for theft in 2002 in Upshur County.
