Remember this cool snap in July

Wednesday, April 04, 2007

The Easter cold snap is here so enjoy and remember this weather about the middle of July through the latter part of September. The joys of Easter are remembered every day for the rest of the life of a Christian. What a wonderful time of the year with all the facts of Easter backed by God's Holy Word. Thanks Editor Phil for your belief and the will to write about it.

If you are employed by the company(s) that resurface Interstate 20 through Harrison County you have job security. I can remember when Interstate 20 was completed and it has been in the patching or resurfacing mode since that time. I am just commenting, not griping. Can you envision Interstate 20 traffic on Hwy. 80?

I drove through the river bottoms in Caddo Parish yesterday traveling south from the Arkansas line. If you want to know about cotton, best you plant a few hills because most of the cotton land is in corn and looking good.

FACT! Three o'clock is always too early or too late for whatever you want to do.

A tip of the hat to Marshall Noon Lions Club for an excellent pancake supper on Tuesday evening at the Civic Center. There was great fellowship; pancakes that would make a weight watcher go back for seconds and the sorriest bacon and sausage that a hog ever gave up. The silent auction is a great idea. I believed my bids would be upped and two were not, so I have some more stuff.

The Home and Garden Show set for next Tuesday will be an event to attend just as last year's production was. This year exhibitors can sell their goods and that is a plus. The speakers are the best. Aubrey King of King Nursery in Tenaha, is one of the south's finest communicators and horticulturist. King will be discussing companion plants for roses in the landscape.

Many of you know Aubrey as the tenor singer and manager of the Calvary Boys Quartet which has been singing Southern Gospel music for over 30 years. Wonder if he will bring any CD's?

Dr. Steve George will discuss Landscape Management featuring EarthKind roses and other plants. A sidekick of Neil Sperry, Dr. George is one of the most in demand lecturers and writers in the nation. Gaye Hammond, President of the Houston Rose Society will give an update on EarthKind rose research. If you don't know about EarthKind roses this is the place to learn and you will enjoy many years of less problem roses. The Home and Garden Show is free and you can enjoy from noon to 9 p.m. The seminars cost $10 for the series. I hope to see you all there. Come and say howdy as I man the mike.

If you want the best tomatoes have them blooming when night temperatures are between 55 and 68 degrees. Why not plant a few vegetables in your flower beds and have a dual purpose garden.

The Farm-City Week Junior Livestock Sale held last Thursday attracted a large crowd and great animals exhibited by youth that we can all be proud of. The auction was very good with buyers paying premium prices to the exhibitors that totaled $137,000, not as much as 2006, but excellent. When buyers attend rather than send bids the results are always greater. Those who support the exhibitors do so in different ways and all are good yet the bids in the auction set the pattern and honor both buyer and seller. The total amount the exhibitors received will be in excess of $184,000, a great price but the kids are worth every bit of it. A special thanks to the Farm City Week Committees who make the week work and get very little thanks, rest or sleep.

Thanks to whoever is working on updating the sign at the Civic Center, can't wait until they are finished.

Keep in mind we can expect two more generations of the May beetles that are enjoying our plants as they eat at night. You can use Sevin or Lorsban to provide some control. Place the insecticide on the ground around the plants they are taking the leaves off. Will it help? I doubt it, but you can try.

Today, attend the Rusk County Electric Co-op's 70th Annual Home, Ranch & Garden Show at the Expo in Henderson. All are invited. It will be from 3 to 7 p.m. with over 50 vendors, continuous music, food, and fellowship.

EASTER SUNDAY! Make time for our maker.
