Early voting ends

Saturday, October 31, 2009

Early voting came to a close Friday night with low voter turnout revealed in totals from the Marshall, Karnack and Woodlawn early polling locations.

"It really, really is a poor turnout. I'm really disappointed in the turnout," said Pam Brock, Harrison County elections administrator. "I wish I knew what to do to get people to vote."

Election day is Tuesday, with the ballots including 11 constitutional amendments and two local issues.

Some county residents can vote on whether Emergency Services District 6 should be established. Karnack citizens can vote in the Karnack Independent School District Chapter 41 election, which will dictate how the district spends extra money received from increased property taxes.

In the Texas constitutional amendment election, 1,114 total ballots were cast. Of those, 965 were votes made in person with 145 by mail, said Ms. Brock.

"We're doing pretty well today," said Ms. Brock. "The last day of early voting is always the heaviest day for early voting."

The total early votes in the constitutional election represent 2.7 percent of the 40,714 registered Harrison County voters.

"They have had put several things out trying to explain what these amendments mean," said Ms. Brock. I have had a lot of people ask me, 'what does this mean?', but I can't tell them. Some of them are rather difficult to understand."

Ms. Brock thinks the difficult wording of constitutional amendments may keep some people home as they fear doing more harm than good.

In the Karnack Independent School District Chapter 41 election, a total of 96 people voted. Six were by mail and 90 were in person. The ballots represent 5.1 percent of the 1,871 people registered in the school district.

In the Emergency Services District 6 election, a total of 81 ballots were cast. Eight were by mail, and 73 were cast in person. The votes represent 4.7 percent of the 1,734 registered voters.

"The majority of the mailed out ballots are Federal Postcard Applications for military. They normally send those in during big elections like gubernatorial or presidential," said Ms. Brock.

Six Harrison County voting centers will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Tuesday. Voters will need to cast their ballot in their own precinct.

Precincts 12, 13, 19 and 25 should vote at Hallsville's Gold Hall, 101 Elm St.

Precincts 15, 16, 23 and 24 should vote at Harleton Community Center, 4335 Community St.

Precincts 6, 7 and 20 should vote at Waskom Sub-courthouse, 165 Texas Ave. W.

Precincts 4, 9, 14 and 18 should vote at Woodlawn Community Center, 199 Oaklawn Terrace.

Precincts 5 and 17 should vote at Karnack's T.J. Taylor Community Center, 15642 Farm-to-Market Road 134.

Precincts 1, 2, 3, 8, 10, 11, 21 and 22 should vote at Marshall Civic Center, 2501 S. East End Blvd.
