Man dies in police chase

Saturday, November 07, 2009

A Scottsville man died Friday night in a single-vehicle rollover accident after fleeing police and driving on the rim of his pickup for over half a mile.

Jesse Keith Jones, 19, was pronounced dead at the scene at 10:10 p.m. Friday by Justice of the Peace Kent Alford. Funeral arrangements are pending with Sullivan Funeral Home.

The incident report said he was not wearing a seat belt.

Trooper Matt Beatty initiated the incident after he noticed a pickup stopped in the middle of U.S. Highway 80 at Indian Springs Road, Texas Department of Public Safety Sgt. Terence Helton said at the scene.

"As he passed by the vehicle, he noticed that its backup lights came on," said Helton.

After noticing the reverse lights, Beatty made a u-turn and pulled in behind the vehicle.

"The suspect vehicle began to backup and (Beatty) noticed the vehicle's speed began to increase," said Helton. "Then (the suspect) struck the front right of Trooper Beatty's vehicle."

After striking the patrol vehicle, the man continued backing up and struck a curb. He then put the pickup into forward motion and began traveling east on U.S. 80 at a very high rate of speed with Beatty pursuing, Helton said.

During the pursuit, the pickup's right front tire went flat. As it came apart, rubber struck the windshield of Beatty's vehicle.

"The pickup traveled on its rim for approximately half a mile," said Helton.

The truck left the roadway about a half mile east of Loop 390, entering the south bar ditch, passed through a barbed wire fence and rolled several times. Jones was ejected, sustaining fatal injuries. He was alone in the vehicle, Helton said.

The pickup came to rest on its top about 100 feet from the south side of the highway. It was recovered by Highway 59 Wrecker Service.

The report does not state why Jones fled from the police.

The accident was investigated by Texas Department of Public Safety troopers Josh Roraback and Joe Hill.

Marshall Fire Department EMTs, Marshall Police Department and Harrison County Sheriff's Department, which directed traffic through the accident site, all responded to the scene.

Blair Hammers volunteered floodlights he uses at Right Kut Inc. He lives nearby and heard the crash and sirens, coming to the aid of troopers and other rescue workers as they cleared the scene Friday.
