Waskom PD receives STEP SPEED grant

Thursday, October 22, 2009

The Waskom Police Department has been approved for the STEP-2010 SPEED grant that became effective Oct. 1 and ends Sept. 30, 2010.

Chief Rex Hawsey said this agreement is made by and between the state of Texas, acting by and through the Texas Department of Transportation.

The Waskom Police Department works on their own time on Interstate Highway 20 monitoring traffic. The officers will increase the overall perception of traffic enforcement "speed," defined as exceeding the posted speed limit or traveling too fast for conditions in an effort to decrease the number of traffic fatalities by decreasing the number and severity of crashes caused by "speed."

They also will be enforcing seat belt, child safety seat and DWI laws.

Please make sure to follow all traffic laws to arrive safely to your final destination.
