Frame's collapse related to accident

A section of the caved in roof is seen through an unfinished window Friday at the site of the new Marshall Police Complex.

An accident at the construction site for the new police station was related to the collapse of a portion of the structure's framing Friday.

According to City Manager Frank Johnson, a worker lost his footing and "in the process of trying to regain it put too much weight on one of the trusses that was not properly braced. It caused a domino effect, one truss fell against another, fell against another and a dozen or so trusses fell and broke apart."

"(It's) nothing life-threatening," Assistant Fire Chief Reginald Cooper said Friday of the accident that occurred at 11 a.m.

Cooper said the initial emergency call indicated there were four people possibly injured but only one man was taken to the hospital.

"This won't affect the cost for us at all. It was something the subcontractor who was working on that particular part of the job will have to repair and replace," said Johnson.

He said he didn't think it would cause a large delay but might slow things a bit as debris was removed and reconstruction of the trusses took place.

"I don't think it will affect the original completion date," said Johnson. Construction began in June and calls for it to be complete 340 days after the start date.

Hand Construction is the contractor for the entire project.

The rain is have some affect on the construction.

The contractor doing the steel work on the new fire complex works through a light rain, Johnson said. "But a heavy rain like today, they are not able to do anything."

Johnson noted both construction projects were at a stage where, until the framing is in place, roof on and it's dried in, they are at the mercy of the weather.
