Home invasion suspects indicted
Grand jury returns total of five indictments against the three men

Thursday, October 29, 2009

Indictments were returned Tuesday on the three capital murder suspects in the Sept. 20, home invasion that resulted in the shooting death of a man and his wife reportedly being assaulted and kidnapped.

Cortne' Mareese Robinson, 18, of 210 Holland St., Marshall, Bradney Randal Smith, 22, of 1103 Esplande St., Marshall, and Travion Dondrell Young, 16, of Karnack all received capital murder indictments Tuesday, said Harrison County District Attorney Joe Black. The trio was also charged with aggravated kidnapping, aggravated sexual assault, aggravated robbery and burglary. At an earlier bond hearing, the three received $500,000 bond amounts for each of four charges, totaling $2 million for each suspect.

Their formal arraignment is set for 1:30 p.m. Nov. 19.

Charges for Robinson, Smith and Young are from a Sept. 20 Marshall home invasion in which a man was fatally shot. His wife was sexually assaulted and kidnapped before she could alert authorities. Emergency personnel took her husband to Good Shepherd Medical Center-Marshall, where he later died.

District Attorney Black has said he's hoping to keep "public comment to a minimum" so as to protect the integrity of the jury pool. The names of the victims were not released by police out of respect for the woman who was sexually assaulted.

Juries were also selected Wednesday in two cases.

The first to go to trial will be James Singleton, 42, of Marshall, charged with a May 11 burglary with testimony to begin on Nov. 9, Black said.

The other jury was selected in the trial of Darren Johnson, 40, 3901 Elysian Fields Road, Marshall, who has been charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. Evidence in Johnson's trial will begin Nov. 12.

In all 49 were indicted by the Harrison County Grand Jury including eight sealed indictments, pending arrest warrant service.
