The Marshall Ford Lincoln Mercury dealership is asking community members to test drive its vehicles for a good cause Saturday.
The company will host its second annual fund-raising event, calling for residents to test drive their vehicles for $20, at Marshall High School.
Marshall Maverick Booster Club member Brenda Haigwood said the event will be from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Hot dogs also will be served.
The money that's collected will go directly toward the high school, but some of the funds may go to the booster club as well.
MHS Principal Ted Huffhines said the money that's raised will go to various programs on campus.
Ford officials are hoping to get at least 300 test drives. Ms. Haigwood said the company raised about $6,000 last year.
The local effort is part of a nationwide initiative of the Ford Motor Company.
"Ford's original plan for the program was just to gain awareness because there are so many new Ford products out. That's Ford's premise behind the program," said Ms. Haigwood. "Ours is to raise money for the school."
Ms. Haigwood said the fund-raiser also allows residents to drive a vehicle of their choice without feeling pressure to purchase it.
"It's become a very popular program. It's basically no pressure at all," said Ms. Haigwood. "You can just go and drive a car."
Ms. Haigwood said Ford officials will have at least one of every model of car the dealership currently has on its lot, except for the Mustang models due to "insurance restrictions." Last year, the company provided about "20 to 25" different vehicles for residents to drive.
Ms. Haigwood said participants will have the option of driving the vehicle "around the block" or a shorter distance if they wish. She said the typical test drive last about six minutes.
"I just invite everyone to come because it's very important," said Ms. Haigwood. "During these economical times, our school needs our money."
Ms. Haigwood said Ford officials will continue run the program as long as the motor company continues to offer it to its local dealerships.
"We did it last year and it was great," said Huffhines. "I encourage everyone to come. It's for a good cause."
