Woman shot in confrontation

Friday, November 06, 2009

A 24-year-old Hallsville woman was shot in the shoulder and a 23-year-old Hallsville man severely beaten early Thursday after two women went to his residence to continue an argument over a man.

"We are getting a lot of conflicting stories," said Harrison County Investigator Jay Webb. "Everybody has a different story."

Jessica Power, 24, the gunshot victim and Rex Morgan Jr., 23, who sustained "severe facial trauma" while being disarmed, are currently being treated for their injuries at Good Shepherd Medical Center-Longview, Webb said in a press release.

The Harrison County Sheriff's Department was called about 1:15 a.m. Thursday to the intersection of Kara Beth Lane and Farm-to-Market 450 in Hallsville where they discovered Morgan lying on the ground. He appeared to have been involved in a fight and was suffering from "severe facial trauma."

At the same time, deputies were alerted by Good Shepherd Medical Center-Longview about a gunshot victim, according to the release.

Neither Power nor Morgan were involved in the initial conflict that began earlier in the evening at Graham's Bar on Spur 64 in Longview.

"The whole thing began with the two girls in Longview. Megan Anderson and Amanda Alasi were arguing over this guy, John Peña," said Webb. "Megan has a child with Peña and now Amanda Alasi is dating John Peña. So it was about him."

The two women left the bar and went to Morgan's residence where they resumed the argument, which escalated.

"John Peña is the boyfriend of the two women," Webb said.

Deputies received conflicting statements about the series events that followed. However, it is agreed that Morgan displayed a weapon and discharged it at least twice, Webb said in a press release.

Power was struck by a bullet in the left shoulder, and her fiancé, Casey Long, then got into a physical altercation with Morgan, disarming him of the weapon, according to the release.

No charges have been filed in this ongoing investigation by Harrison County Sheriff's Department.
