A million more reasons to praise Washington

Wednesday, December 19, 2007

We just wrote an editorial praising actor Denzel Washington for Sunday's editions and, ordinarily, we would not come back to the same subject so quickly.

But there are one million reasons to do so today — the cool $1 million Washington has given to Wiley to revive the school's debate team.

We cannot add many superlatives to those we have already written. The community spirit that Washington is showing with this tremendous donation makes us feel as if he is, indeed, one of our community.

Perhaps we need to officially adopt him.

We don't know what this community can do for him, but we would suggest that someone think about an appropriate "thank you." It will not be in a plaque or presentation, but there are things that people like Denzel Washington appreciate.

We would guess that near the top of that list is seeing that his money brings forth some accomplishment. That will take more than a donation. It will take a community effort to get behind it and get behind Wiley.

We suggested as much on our editorial pages Sunday.

Thank you, Mr. Washington. Once again, we appreciate your generosity and your feeling toward our community.

We assure you that the feeling is most certainly mutual.

We didn't get FutureGen in Texas.

At one time, quite a long time ago, Harrison County put in its own bid for FutureGen — the $2 billion new-generation coal fired power plant that is being engineered to not emit global-warming gases.

Though we felt this area had attributes, those doing the choosing were not convinced. We fell out in the first round of cuts.

But two Texas sites were eventually picked out of four finalists for the plant — Odessa in West Texas and Jewett, which is much closer to Marshall.

In the end the winner is Mattoon, Ill. and getting the project could mean hundreds of jobs.

Or, it could be another Superconducting Supercollider, the Texas project that was begun and never finished. Congress is beginning to have second thoughts now that the suggested pricetag has doubled.

This should not come as any great surprise. The surprise would be if the price had stayed the same. Additionally, as it will take years to build this plant, we would imagine the ultimate cost will be at least 50 percent higher than the current estimate.

It is still worth it. This is technology we will have to have. We wish it could have been tried first in Texas, but if not here, Illinois will do. The longer we wait to begin the higher price will be.
