DILLARD: After rains, more sunshine needed

Thursday, October 22, 2009

Remember that as you read this column it was written before this morning so it's too bad that we could not have continued the cool, dry sunshine days earlier in the week. Predictions are for rain today and Friday followed by another few days of sunshine and cool weather. Lack of sunshine is taking its toll on agriculture.

Red River Research Station usually has its fall and winter production of big red greenhouse tomatoes out by now, but lack of sunshine has limited the coloring of the tomatoes. Maybe we need to learn to make green tomato chow-chow again. I like it.

"Conscience is the inner voice that warns us somebody may be looking."

Double O Charolais Ranch had sunshine, buyers and a good auction last Saturday as the 65 bulls averaged $2,400 and the total of the sale was $299,000 plus. The Spring Production Auction will be March 27, 2010.

Get ready to get a better nights rest. Daylight Savings Time ends Sunday, Nov. 1, the day after Halloween.

We met some folks while at Ruidoso, N.M., for the Cowboy Symposium earlier this month that were searching for information on some of their kin from Marshall. The man's name was Marshall Harrison and was related to the Grigsby family. If you could be any help to them let me know and I will pass along the information.

There are some things that we, as Americans, need to do whatever needs to be done about some legislation that has already come up. We cannot sit back and do nothing and expect someone else to take care of our responsibility.

Cap and Trade is economic suicide. Something may need to be done but this legislation is not it.

Climate control is not focused on our climate situation but paying other countries because we are more industrialized. No deal.

If the health care bill will not benefit all Americans, then write something that will.

Americans, if we don't place God back in the leadership of our nation, state and family, in the future we will. We are under God's control and timetable.

If you are a private property owner, it is in your best interest to vote YES on Proposition 11 in the Nov. 3 election. Eminent Domain in the wrong hands in WRONG. Vote YES on Prop. 11.

Harrison County Cattlemen's Association will have its annual meeting Nov. 12 at 6 p.m. p.m. when the meal begins. Billy Higginbotham is an excellent speaker with a message of mirth and facts. For reservations call the County Agent's office at 903-935-8413.

"It's critical to determine where you stand before you have to make your stand." This is a quote from Trey Talley, who will head Team Impact as they present a program Oct. 23,24 and 25, 7 p.m. each evening at First Baptist Church in Waskom. The program of strength is for all ages and has a message that will lift us all. Be there as each night is different. There is no charge so just come.

Planting spring bulbs is a late fall and winter tradition in East Texas.

Many of the bulbs are difficult to get to their full potential with our "not-so-cold winters." Potential is the beautiful pictures we see in the gardening catalogs. By chilling the bulbs we can enjoy the adapted ones, but you need to get the chilling time right. Hyacinths, narcissis, daffodils and a few other bulbs have a better chance of success in our area.

State Fair of Louisiana opened yesterday and runs through Nov. 8 kicking off with the PRCA Championship Rodeo this Friday and Saturday produced by Classic Pro Rodeo.

The rodeo ticket gets you in the fair free so don't miss a performance. If you are just a casual rodeo fan, you will recognize many of the contestants.

With all the rain, our Confederate Rose has never been more beautiful with great flowers and lush foliage.

The 35th Harvest Festival and Livestock Show is in Longview this week.

FFA and 4-H livestock exhibitors from Gregg County and all counties that border Gregg are eligible to exhibit and make the auction this coming Saturday.

Thanks to the Harvest Festival for this opportunity to show and sell the projects. The auction begins after the barbecue at 5 p.m. on Saturday.
