Local softball, baseball teams journey forward

Wednesday, May 07, 2008

Following a packed weekend last week that saw six Harrison and Marion counties softball and baseball teams combine to play 18 games over a two-day span, the playoff journey will continue for five teams this weekend.

All six local playoff teams lost the opening game of their respective best-of-3 series last weekend but four of those recovered to sweep the final two games and advance.

Here's a run down of what to look for this weekend:

Hallsville (26-5), which defeated Rockwall-Heath in a marathon set that included a 24-inning opening game (believed to be a state record, although the UIL does not keep track of most innings in a game), will battle with fifth-ranked Forney in a Class 4A, Region II best-of-3 regional quarterfinal tilt.

Game 1 will be at 7 p.m. tonight at Lindale followed by a second game at 7 p.m. Friday in Lindale. A third game, if needed, will be played Saturday in Lindale at a time to be determined.

Kayla Jackson led the Ladycats to the series win over Heath, pitching 34-and-two-thirds innings of a possible 38 innings in the series.

Brittany Eitel also homered in Game 2 of the series while Danielle Jones knocked a game-winning, walk-off single in the deciding match.

The winner of this series will take on Waco Midway or Midlothian in the regional semifinal round.

Harleton's baseball team will kick off its Class 2A, Region III best-of-3 area round clash with Mount Pleasant Chapel Hill tonight.

First pitch is set for 6:30 p.m. in Hughes Springs. The series will resume Saturday at noon in Hughes Springs with a deciding game, if necessary, to be played 30 minutes after Game 2.

The Wildcats (21-5) rolled past Linden-Kildare last week after letting a 14-run lead slip in the opening game, which they lost 17-14.

Brett Bolt hit a pair of home runs for Harleton in the opening game as the 'Cats produced 39 runs over the three games.

Chase Jones fronted Game 3's effort by going 4-for-4 with two doubles while Connor Lloyd, Logan Jones, Trebor Webb and Billy King all went for two hits apiece.

The winner of this series will advance to face either Winnsboro or tenth-ranked Hughes Springs in a regional quarterfinal match.

Elysian Fields' baseball will begin its playoff quest tonight after receiving a bye in the first round due to capturing the District 21-2A championship.

The seventh-ranked Yellow Jackets (20-2-1) will tangle with Kountze in a Class 2A, Region III best-of-3 area series.

Game 1 will take place at 6:30 p.m. tonight at Lufkin Pollok Central with the second game to follow at 6 p.m. Friday. A third game, if needed, will follow 30 minutes after the second game.

The winner of this set will battle Troup or Hemphill in the regional quarterfinals.

Elysian Fields' softball stormed back to take a pair of games against Anahuac last week to win the series, 2-1.

The Lady Jackets (24-11) are now set to square off with Woden (16-4) in a Class 2A, Region III best-of-3 regional quarterfinal clash.

Game 1 is set for 6 p.m. Friday in Whitehouse with a second game to follow at 2 p.m. Saturday. A third game, if necessary, would take place 30 minutes after the second match.

Rosie Lawrence (7-for-12) and Danie'l Goss (6-for-11) highlighted Elysian Fields' offensive attack last weekend while Blair Hickey pitched all three games.

Cheryl Boyett also had a walk-off single in the ninth inning of Game 2 to send the Lady Jackets to the win.

The winner of this series will face Harleton or Woden in a regional semifinal affair.

Harleton softball recovered from blowing a late lead in Game 1 last week to take a pair of games over Mount Pleasant Chapel Hill and advance.

The Lady Wildcats (24-8-1) now face New Boston in a Class 2A, Region III best-of-3 regional quarterfinal series.

Game 1 is set for 7 p.m. Friday in New Boston with Game 2 set to shift to Harleton at 1 p.m. Saturday. A final game, if needed, will take place 30 minutes after Game 2's finish.

Shelley Henigan (three hits), Ashle Barrow (two doubles) and Shelby Drew (2-for-4, triple) combined to lead Harleton past the Lady Red Devils in Game 2 last week while Lakyn Evers also pitched and went 3-for-4. Evers also pitched for the win in the deciding game.

The winner of this series will take on Elysian Fields or Woden in a regional semifinal match.
