Marshall kept it close in the final game but Texas High still pulled away for a 25-16, 25-21, 25-22 sweep of the Lady Mavs in a District 13-4A volleyball match Friday afternoon at Maverick Gymnasium.
The loss ended Marshall's (16-16, 5-6) playoff hopes, while securing the fourth and final playoff spot for the Lady Tigers (22-17, 7-5) for the second straight season.
After battling through 12 ties during the final game, Texas High pulled away with a short three-point run at the end, capped by a block by Teeundra Thompson and Kaci Stilson to finish the match.
Thompson had had a match-best 17 kills and three blocks.
The Lady Mavs kept the third game close after falling behind 4-0 early. They used a 5-1 spurt midway through to assume a 12-11 lead when the Lady Tigers were called for a line violation. Marshall later pushed its lead to two points on two occasions, the last of which was at 18-16 following a Texas High hitting error.
The Lady Tigers responded with a three-point swing, though, to reclaim the lead.
The Lady Mavs led only twice during the second game — at 1-0 and 2-1 — but they made the outcome close near the end when Rokaria Ellie helped serve them to seven straight points to pull within 18-17 after a lift call on Texas High.
Ellie had four kills while Jackie Stephens paced Marshall with nine kills. Jinaki Robinson added 12 assists.
The Lady Tigers then ran off five consecutive points, however, capped by a Thompson kill, to move their lead back to 23-17.
The opening game went through six ties and six lead changes during the early stages, but Texas High eventually pulled away when Carlen Kessell served it to a 4-1 run and Morgan Patton later served it to a six-point spurt that ended with a 22-13 Lady Tigers' lead.
The Lady Mavs will close their season with a home match against cross-county rival Hallsville on Tuesday.
