Ladycats down Marshall, end year unbeaten in district

Wednesday, October 28, 2009

Hallsville used a balanced hitting attack and good ball movement to post a quick 25-17, 25-12, 25-10 sweep of cross-county rival Marshall in both team's season finale Tuesday at Maverick Gymnasium.

The win sealed an undefeated streak through District 13-4A play for the Ladycats (31-7, 12-0), who now move into next week's Class 4A UIL State playoffs as the league's top seed.

With the loss, the Lady Mavs (17-18, 5-7) ended their run in fifth place — the same place as last season — a spot out of playoff contention.

"I told them this is the best team that I've ever had," said Hallsville head coach Cheryl Bell, adding that she believes this is the first undefeated district team she's led since becoming a head coach in 1994.

"I'm really proud of this group of girls," Bell continued. "They're a joy to work with. They make my job really easy."

The Ladycats didn't receive much of a scare from the Lady Mavs in either of the final two games after jumping out to leads of 7-1 in Game 2 and 10-2 in the final game.

Marshall would cut the deficit to three points, at 8-5, in the second game, but that was as close as it would get.

The Lady Mavs did stay close during the opening game, however, battling through five ties, to keep the margin close.

Marshall's Jinaki Robinson found Gloria Beham for a kill to knot the tally at 16-16, but Hallsville then responded with a seven-point run fueled by Morgan Peck's service.

Robinson led her team with 10 assists while Beham, a freshman, had a team-best five kills.

The run ended with a Lady Mavs' return sailing wide right, giving the Ladycats a commanding 24-16 lead.

Stephanie Bayne later finished Marshall off with a kill off a pass from Elizabeth Daily, who led all players with 30 assists to go along with six digs.

Marshall head coach April Helton said she was still satisfied with her team's season in spite of missing out on the postseason.

"I am happy with the season," the second-year head coach said.

"We were hoping to get to the playoffs and just missed out again. Hopefully, we can make it next year."

Helton will return the majority of her team next fall after losing just three seniors — Rokaria Ellie, Kiera Wilkins and Gabrielle Taylor — from this squad.

Hallsville, meanwhile, is hoping to keep playing for awhile this year.

"Our focus hasn't changed," Bell said. "Now we're where at (the place) where we've worked all year to get. We're going to try to eliminate our mistakes and get better."

The Ladycats will take on Carthage in a playoff warm-up at 5 p.m. Friday.
