Marshall's upcoming district football game against Sulphur Springs has been moved to a different location due to poor field conditions.
The decision was announced Wednesday that the Mavericks' District 13-4A game against the defending state champion Wildcats will be moved from Sulphur Springs' Gerald Prim Stadium to Sam A. Parker Field in Mount Pleasant.
Kickoff will remain at 7:30 p.m. and all reserve tickets will be honored. Tickets at the gate will be $6.
That's good news for Marshall fans planning on attending the road game, which will now be nearly 80 minutes shorter round-trip from Marshall.
Sulphur Springs officials cited poor field conditions for the reason of the switch. Prim Stadium features a grass playing surface, while Mount Pleasant — which is currently in its bye week — plays on FieldTurf.
The hope is that the synthetic playing surface will likely cut down the risk of injuries for each team, which are both playing for playoff berths with two weeks remaining in the regular season.
"I've seen it on film; they've had a lot of standing water on the field," said Marshall head coach Thedrick Harris, whose team played in similar conditions during a non-district loss to Monroe (La.) Neville earlier this season.
"But it's like I've told our kids, regardless of where we play, regardless of the situation or the field conditions or weather or anything, we've got to go play and win," Harris continued. "The conditions are going to be the same for both teams."
The move also means that Sulphur Springs will have about an 80-minute drive round-trip instead of a home game, which was set to be their final home match of the season.
Despite the switch in venues, Sulphur Springs will still act as the home team and it will still hold its Senior Night activities, which will begin at 7 p.m.
According to weather.com, rain is expected today and Friday in Sulphur Springs and Mount Pleasant. The Web site reports a 70 percent chance of rain with temperatures dipping into the low-40s Friday in Mount Pleasant.
Harris said his team has already had plenty of practice in the rain this week, and the coach doesn't think either team will benefit over the other from inclement weather.
"I don't look at it as an advantage for either team," Harris said. "Our kids just have to go out and not worry about all of that. They just have to go play."
A win would seal a third straight playoff bid for Marshall (5-3, 3-1), which could also maintain its track toward second place in the district with a win.
The Mavs are coming off a thrilling 36-30 win over Texas High last week.
The Wildcats (6-2, 2-2) could nearly lock up a postseason bid with a win, as well.
