UNION GROVE — The Union Grove Lions (6-3, 3-3) made the most of a very sloppy field to beat the Elysian Fields Yellow Jackets (4-5, 1-5) 14-8 Friday night at Glyn Johnson Stadium.
The field conditions created a defensive struggle all the way for both teams.
The only offensive touchdown was made by the Lions' Dillon Penn on a 20-yard pass from Dalton Melton. Then, in the third quarter, the Yellow Jackets had a blocked punt in the end zone that was recovered by the Lions for a touchdown.
The only score Elysian Fields was able to muster was a 63-yard fumble return by Rodney Sutton in the fourth quarter.
Elysian Fields had -10 yards rushing to Union Grove's 185 yards, as the Lions controlled the game with their huge running back, Richard Pittman.
Elysian Fields quarterback Austin Delk was 12-for-33 with 89 yards passing.
On the defensive side, there were six Elysian Fields players with double-duty tackles: Dave Carroll, Jake Dickson, Dewayne Adams, Cabe Dickson and Chase Hatton, who had 12 tackles.
Elysian Fields will face Winona at home Friday. Union Grove will challenge New Diana.
