Fishing Report

Sunday, November 01, 2009

Reports tell us that October 2009 was the wettest ever recorded at some 11 plus inches.

Water levels on Caddo have been falling some three to four inches per day over the last week. Depending on the amount of rainfall this present wet spell brings, we will see water levels climbing again very soon.

I have been on Caddo pretty regular the last couple of weeks working on duck blinds. Sad to say, the high water is not moving the floating vegetation, especially around the shoreline pockets, much at all on the south side of Caddo. Northern winds are keeping everything pushed back against the bank. Air boats are the only thing that can get around without some problems.

I checked Little Cypress recently. It is out of its banks and still rising. Were it not for running folks out of their homes, we could hope for about another four-foot rise above what we have now on Caddo to really do any good concerning flushing the hyacinths and other floating growth out of the lake.

Severe flooding is the thing that will help remove the floating stuff the most.

Catfish and sand bass are the thing now with all the flooding. Catfish are very active against the bank and sand bass are very good in the swift running waters. Catfish are hitting anything that smells while sand bass are hitting jigs and shiners.

As long as Lake O' the Pines gates are closed there is some crappie action on shiners and jigs along the river bed over brush.

At The Marinas

Tucker's Camp, Caddo, 903-679-3137: High water has thing pretty well on hold at present. Launching is possible with small John boats straight from the pickup bed by hand. The big rigs are out of luck at present. Catfish are there if you can get to them around the banks.

Johnson's Ranch, Caddo, 903-789-3213: Launching is possible with small rigs or, if you have a winch with a long enough line, you can get a big rig afloat. Like everybody else, catfish and sand bass are the at Johnson's.

Crip's Camp, Caddo, 903-789-3233: Conditions here are about like everybody else — poor launching conditions with catfish and sand bass good if you can get to them.

Island View, Lake O' the Pines, 903-777-4161: High water is hampering normal activities at present. Catfish good around the banks and crappie is fair along the river bed on shiners as long as current is not a problem,

Did you know: Studies reveal the average life of the earthworm is six years.
