Lady Jackets get playoff win

Wednesday, November 04, 2009

ORE CITY — Madison Struwe had a match-best nine kills and Caylyn Thompson added a match high of 14 assists as Elysian Fields ran away with a 25-22, 25-21, 25-19 sweep of Daingerfield in a Class 2A bi-district playoff game Tuesday night at Rebel Gymnasium.

Struwe and Thompson, two of the three seniors on the Lady Jackets' roster, helped their team to the win after Elysian Fields came back late to steal the opening game, along with the match's momentum.

"(The first game) was huge," said Elysian Fields head coach Brandy King, whose team will now head into an area match Thursday against Jewett Leon, tentatively set for 7 p.m. at Tyler Junior College's Wagstaff Gymnasium.

"I think just for their nerves and for my nerves," King continued. "It was big for us to jump on them quick."

The Lady Jackets (19-12) traded leads with the Lady Tigers (18-19) for most of the first game until a 4-1 run that ended with an Elysian Fields line error gave Daingerfield an 18-14 cushion.

The Lady Tigers later held onto a 22-20 lead when Elysian Fields made it's game-deciding move, reeling off the match's final five points behind the service of Kaylee Prather.

A Chesney Spears block off a Daingerfield set that floated too near the net provided the Lady Jackets with a 23-22 advantage and the sixth lead change of the game (there was also seven ties in the first game).

Prather then finished the job with a sinking ace that fell in front of a pair of diving Lady Tigers' defenders, followed by a high, floating serve that a Daingerfield setter was unable to handle for the final point.

"What we worked on to stop them, the girls did," said King, whose team faced Daingerfield earlier in the season and also had a chance to scout them last Saturday. "They kind of knew what they were up against and they were able to key in."

After coming back to finish off the first game, the Lady Jackets took a different approach in the final two by taking early leads, which also helped ease the pressure a bit.

Elysian Fields jumped out to leads of 19-12 in Game 2 and 13-4 in the final game, never trailing after either point.

Daingerfield did stage a five-point swing to pull to within 19-17 after a Mariah Coleman kill in the second game, but the Lady Jackets responded with a 4-2 run that included a Candise Wise kill to move the advantage to 23-19.

Struwe eventually sealed the win with a block of a Satoya Mason hit.

"We do tend to level off at times, so yeah, that cushion helps out a lot," King said. "It gives us a little bit of breathing room."

Holding the 2-0 lead, Elysian Fields took no risks in the final game, using the service of Wise, Thompson and Struwe to race out to a commanding 13-4 lead.

The Lady Tigers clawed back to within four points — the closest they would get — but the Lady Jackets promptly ripped off a four-point run finished off with three straight Kayetlyn Busbey serves that Daingerfield was unable to return.
