Mavericks earn statewide award following win

Wednesday, November 04, 2009

Marshall has been recognized with a statewide award following its playoff-clinching win over Sulphur Springs last week.

The Mavericks, who defeated the Wildcats 48-13 to wrap up a spot in the UIL Class 4A, Division II playoffs last Friday, earned the Army Strong Team of the Week for Division 4A by Dave Campbell's Texas Football, the organization announced Tuesday.

According to a press release regarding the selection, "the Marshall Mavericks were chosen for this honor because of their teamwork, dedication, discipline, personal courage and integrity, values shared by U.S. Army Soldiers."

The award will be presented to the team at a time to be determined later this week by a representative of the U.S. Army.

"The U.S. Army is recognizing the student-athletes at Marshall High School for demonstrating qualities similar to those exhibited by its soldiers. Student-athletes and Soldiers share similar values, but more importantly they must be mentally, emotionally and physically strong," said Captain Anthony Whittaker.

"We expect to see some of these young men competing at the U.S. Army All-American Bowl, the college level, or maybe even professionally in the future."

Marshall will conclude the regular season with a home match against Mount Pleasant on Friday. It will be Senior Night. The Mavericks (6-3, 4-1) will then play either Lindale, Henderson or Kilgore in a Class 4A, Division II bi-district playoff the following week.

The Mavs will likely play Henderson in the opening round if the Lions defeat Whitehouse this Friday. If Whitehouse wins, though, it would open Marshall's potential matches to Lindale or Kilgore.
