TYLER — Jewett Leon used a balanced hitting attack to dispatch a scrappy Elysian Fields team, 25-17, 25-21, 25-22, in a Class 2A area playoff game Thursday night at Tyler Junior College's Wagstaff Gymnasium.
The Lady Cougars (39-3), ranked eighth in the final Texas Girls Coaches Association Class 2A statewide poll, had five players with at least five kills apiece, led by Amy Holt and Elisa Downey, who each finished with nine.
The spread out offensive effort helped them sweep the pesky Lady Jackets (19-13), who continuously made Jewett Leon work for its points behind a relentless defensive effort at the net and on the floor.
"They don't like to lose and they were just hustling everywhere tonight," said Elysian Fields head coach Brandy King. "It's probably the best match we've put together the whole season and this was the time to do it. I couldn't ask for any more."
Down 2-0, the Lady Jackets stuck around until the end in the final game, using a five-point run behind the service of Madison Struwe to take a late 18-14 lead.
Struwe and fellow senior Cimber Davis led Elysian Fields with five kills apiece in their final match as a Lady Jacket. Caylyn Thompson, who finished with three kills, rounded out the Lady Jackets' group of seniors.
After a short Lady Cougars spurt, the teams then traded leads back and forth until Elysian Fields extended its lead to 22-20 following a Jewett Leon service error, its 10th of the match.
After breaking serve, the Lady Cougars managed one last run, though, using Kayla Varvel's service to claim the game's final five points to streak to the win.
Varvel ended with seven kills and a match best three aces. Kari Charlton chipped in with six kills.
Allison Corrigan notched four for the Lady Cougar squad.
Chelby Stanford led all players with 30 assists.
Elysian Fields remained close in each of the first two games as well, trailing only 23-21 in Game 2 after Thompson's service led her team to a three-point swing.
Again, though, the Lady Cougars recovered to take the final two points behind Holt's service.
The Lady Jackets also trailed 20-17 in the opening game when Varvel led Jewett Leon to five consecutive points, three of which came from Holt kills.
Although Elysian Fields showed a lot of grit in the match, the few lapses it did have took a toll.
"Defensively we got caught standing a few times," King said.
"We did a scouting report, and the girls did all the things they needed to do ... You definitely can't make hardly any mistakes with a team like that. You have to play very clean."
Thompson paced the Lady Jackets with 12 assists, while Candise Wise chipped in with three kills.
Jewett Leon will move on to face with No. 2-ranked White Oak or Troup.
