The Nu Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc., presented a $1,000 scholarship to a Marshall High School graduating senior.

Ashley Katy Ortiz accepted the scholarship at the MHS Senior Awards Assembly last month, where more than 90 students took home collectively more than $2 million in scholarships.

Ortiz plans to study nursing at Panola College and East Texas Baptist University in Marshall. She is an honor student and graduated May 24 in the top 10 percent of her class.

Her essay entitled, “How Planning for My Future Now Will Impact the World Around Me,” was exceptionally well-written and thought-provoking, said Scholarship Chairperson Cheryel Carpenter.

“This is truly an honor,” Ortiz said. “Thank you for selecting me.”

During the awards assembly, members of the Nu Omega Chapter also announced the return of its debutante ball, which provides more college scholarship opportunities.

The ball is open to all high school girls who are junior and seniors. Young women enrolled as college freshmen are also able to participate.

Applicants must be in good academic standing with high moral and ethical standards.

“It continues to be a long-standing tradition of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority to promote and celebrate the achievements of young girls and women in our communities,” said Nu Omega Chapter President Patricia Jackson. “We are proud to celebrate the achievements of young girls who will represent some of the finest communities in the greater East Texas area.”

The Debutante Ball is a competition for awards and scholarships. It is designed to prepare young girls to transition into college and be successful in life, Carpenter said.

The process includes personal enrichment workshops, community service and culminates with the traditional ball, where young ladies are introduced to society at an elegant formal presentation.

Founded in 1908, the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority has been supporting education and the upward mobility of young women in communities around the world.
