PARIS - Chris Ponder entered Thursday with five hits in his last eight at-bats, but his pitching helped lead the Marshall Pre-Majors All-Stars reach their goal.
Ponder allowed five hits and two earned runs with four walks and three strikeouts in 6 2/3 innings and was one of seven players to get hits in a convincing 9-2 victory against host Paris on Thursday in the Dixie State Tournament at Hub Hollis Field on the campus of Paris Junior College.
The victory sends Marshall to the World Series in Guntersville, Ala. from July 28-Aug. 1, where it will play North Carolina at 4 p.m. on opening day at Guntersville High School and would face either the host team or Virginia at 1 p.m. or 7 p.m. on the same field July 29.
This is the second time in three years Guntersville has hosted the Pre-Majors World Series.
Tyler Kotowicz and Staylen Roach led off the bottom of the second inning with back-to-back hits and both stole second base. Tyler Holmes' sacrifice fly gave Marshall an early 2-0 lead.
Holmes (walk) began a five-run, two-out rally in the fourth inning, scoring in front of Cameron Hill (single) on Sam Lastra's two-RBI double. Lastra stole third and scored on an error, Trevor Spear walked and stole home while Keith Biggs was hit by pitch, stole a pair of bases and scored on a passed ball.
Paris loaded the bases in the fifth inning on Hunter Stephens' double, Ryan Poole's single and Connor Henry's walk. Stephens scored on Trevor Huey's RBI single, and Garrett Perry added a sacrifice fly.
Marshall got the runs back in the sixth, with Spear drawing a leadoff walk and scoring on a wild pitch. Biggs singled and scored on Andy Guinea's RBI hit for the final margin.
