HOUSTON – Timothy Morgan, a CenterPoint Energy construction and maintenance technician and volunteer firefighter, was recently honored as an outstanding volunteer and Jefferson Award recipient.

The Jefferson Awards are a prestigious national recognition system honoring community and public service in America, presented on both a national and local level.

Morgan logged 400 hours as a volunteer in 2011 alone, primarily with the Woodlawn Volunteer Fire Department. He has served the department since 2009 and currently is the department's captain, certification coordinator and training department instructor. In addition, he has completed 200 hours of training to become a certified Level 2 firefighter and first responder.

Morgan began volunteering as a teenager and is proud that his teenage son, Dylan, has also caught the bug, serving as a certified basic firefighter. Working together to fight last summer's wildfires in East Texas was one of Tim's most rewarding volunteer experiences.

"To be out there, battling the blazes and saving structures with my 16- year-old son was extremely hard work, but so worth it," he said. "I saw my son mature in many ways while giving of his weekends and days. Plus, the gratitude we saw in the community's eyes at the command station refilled our drained energy so we could go back out and fight even harder."

Morgan and his family live in Marshall, and he has worked for the past 15 years in the natural gas industry, primarily in construction. Morgan volunteered at the Don Jordan Scholarship Fundraiser Bar-B-Que in Houston and, with his family, staffed a booth at the 2011 Mudbug Madness Festival in Shreveport – both CenterPoint Energy-sponsored events. Tim also helped cooks for youth group fundraisers at Woodlawn Baptist Church.

"Last year, CenterPoint Energy employees and retirees, along with family and friends, amassed a staggering 235,847 volunteer hours," said Diane Hasell, Community Relations senior director for CenterPoint Energy. "We're extremely proud to have generous and compassionate employees like Tim who are so willing to serve in their local communities."
