Sanders named ETBU Assistant Provost

Dr. Tommy Sanders has been named as the Assistant Provost and Associate Professor of Religion in the School of Christian Studies at ETBU. He has more than 12 years of experience in higher education and is a published author with an expertise in the areas of leadership.

"I am pleased that Dr. Sanders has joined the ETBU family," said ETBU President Dr. Dub Oliver. "He is an experienced professional in higher education and has a ministry background serving in the local church with young adults and families. A great combination as he works with ETBU students to succeed in meeting their educational goals."

Dr. Sanders began his employment at ETBU on June 1 and will oversee the Office of Academic Success and Graduate Services. The office provides advising support, oversight of the freshman year experience program, student success programs, ACE (Academic Center for Excellence), which is the University's tutorial program, disability accommodations, and graduate placement services.

"Since my first moments at East Texas Baptist University, I have felt like I was coming home," said Dr. Sanders. "The welcoming culture of this East Texas community of faith and learning really resonates with me along with the apparent commitment to empowering students to become Christian servant leaders. This place and the people feel like a fit with my calling and experience."

Dr. Sanders comes to ETBU after serving at Dallas Baptist University since 2006. At DBU, he was the Director of two graduate programs, Children's Ministry and Family Ministry and an Associate Professor of Christian Education, Leadership, and Research. From 1996-2003, he served as the Director of Childhood Ministry Publishing for LifeWay Christian Resources in Nashville, Tenn.

He has also served as an adjunct professor at DBU and New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary. Dr. Sanders has served in the local church as a minister at Park Cities Baptist Church, Dallas; Hyde Park Baptist Church, Austin; First Baptist Church, Waco; First Baptist Church, Hewitt; and Calvary Baptist Church, Waco, in the areas of preschool, children, youth, and families ministry. Dr. Sanders is a sought after speaker on ministry topics related to preschoolers, children, student, family and leadership development.

Dr. Sanders earned a Doctor of Philosophy in Leadership Studies degree in 2009 from Dallas Baptist University. He completed his undergraduate study at Baylor University where he received a Bachelor of Arts in Religion degree in 1987. He earned a Master of Arts in Religious Education degree from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in 1990.

Dr Sanders, and his wife Treva, who is a Marshall native, have three grown children Katie, Jayne Claire, and Kyle.
