Top tips on how to clean an area rug

Oct. 31, 2016 at midnight

Cleaning expensive area rugs is not a chore that should be done at home whether by your local carpet cleaner or the homeowner with store bought detergents. Authentic rugs are typically made with cotton foundations and the fibers are hand tied with wool, silk and or cotton yarns. Shrinkage, color loss, dye bleeding and chemically damaging the fibers are risk that the home owner takes when not using a Certified Master Rug Cleaner. Older rugs use natural dyes which are not stable and present many problems like colors bleeding into other areas and cotton foundations that can shrink faster than wool face fibers and cause rippling and shrinking on the ends. These are just a few of the problems that can happen when an inexperienced cleaner attempts to clean a rug.

The proper way to clean a wool rug begins with a thorough pre-inspection and pre-qualifying to determine what cleaning process best suits each individual rug. We begin with removing as much dry soil as possible and this can not be done with a vacuum. Floor Medic utilizes an automatic dusting machine where rugs are fed through one end of the machine and the dry dirt is removed by "beating" the back of the rug. A wool rug can hold pounds of dirt before it appears visually soiled because wool fibers have fish scale type pockets which hold many times their weight in soil, dander, mites and grit. This is not just "dirt" but bacteria, germs, oil and many other contaminates tracked in by your feet. Simply washing a rug full of dirt in the foundation and face fibers creates a muddy mess. This is why each rug needs to be mechanically dusted before it gets wet.

We thoroughly test all rugs for color fast dyes and if they are not stable, we stabilize the dyes in a special solution. The rug is then pre-treated and washed using a mild shampoo and plenty of water. The rug is then given an initial rinse and rolled up and placed in our centrifuge wringer. The dirty water is forced out and fresh water is introduced for a final rinse.

Because all rugs are different we chose the correct drying method for each rug. This could be laid flat, face up or down, or hanging in our drying chamber where the temperature and humidity is monitored and controlled.

The fringes need more work to get clean because they are usually constructed of cotton which is more absorbent and show soils more than wool. The fringes are scrubbed during the cleaning process but occasionally need more detailing after the rug is removed from the centrifuge. Any other spot and stain treatment is done at this time. After we determine the rug is 100% dry, we groom the fibers leaving a very soft feel.

Rugs under normal use should be washed every 18-24 months and be vacuumed every week. If you have a rug in a high use area, or an area with pets, consider washing them annually. Rugs, carpets and upholstery act as filters and grab airborne contaminates and hold them in their fibers. When this "filter" gets full, every use of the item gives a puff of these germs and contaminates back into the air. Regular cleaning also helps keep the indoor air healthier and allergies down to a minimum.
