Season ends for Harleton girls in loss to West Rusk

LONGVIEW - Harleton's girls basketball team saw its season come to an end Monday night after falling short to the West Rusk Lady Raiders, 61-40, at Lobo Coliseum.

The Ladycats finish the season with an overall record of 14-11. The Lady Raiders advance to the next round where they'll take on Prairiland.

"I'm very proud of them," Harleton head coach Shanna Johnson said of her Ladycats. "I wouldn't trade that group of girls that I have for any group in the country. I love them. I think they love me and I have a great group of seniors and I couldn't ask for a better group of young ladies."

Mary Echols led Harleton in scoring with 21 points. Devon Smith scored eight. Hanna Watson scored four and Tyler Mobley scored three.

Jala Hooper also scored 21 points to lead the Lady Raiders in scoring. Jasmine Session was next with 11 points. Jazmine Sanchez scored 10. Alyson McMillan and Meredith Herron each scored six points and Brey Ruiz scored two.

Herron hit a three to give the Lady Raiders a quick 3-0 lead. A bucket from Underwood put Harleton on the board, making it 3-2. A three from Echols tied the game up at 5-5. Moments later, with the game tied at 7, Sanchez's three gave West Rusk a 10-7 lead. She knocked down another three moments later to make it 15-9. A free throw from Cangialosi gave the Lady Raiders a 16-9 lead.

Session had back-to-back layups to spread her team's lead to 20-9 with 41 seconds left in the first quarter. Smith found Underwood for the assist to make it 22-11. Hooper then banked in shot from downtown at the buzzer to make it 25-11 heading into the second quarter.

A three from McMillan and another from Herron gave the Lady Raiders a 33-13 lead. Smith then hit a bucket to make it 34-15. Session found Cangialosi to make it 38-15. A pair of shots from Watson made it 42-19 as the two teams headed to the locker room at the half.

Hooper scored the first points of the second half before Echols added a free throw. That made it 44-20. Echols added a layup to make it 44-22. After a few free throws, a jumper from Watson made it 47-25.

Session stole the ball and took it back for a layup to make it 49-25. A free throw from Mobley made it 49-26. Echols added a bucket to cut Harleon's deficit to 49-28. A couple free throws from Session made it 51-28 going into the fourth quarter.

Hooper scored the first three points of the fourth quarter on an and-one. Moments later, Echols hit a three to make it 55-31. A jumper by Smith made it 55-33. Smith hit a jumper moments before Echols drained a three to bring the score to 55-37. Sanchez found Hooper who put the Lady Raiders back up by 20 points, 57-37. Echols hit another three before Hooper scored the last four points on a couple buckets and sealed up the win for West Rusk, 61-40.
