The Marshall High School Debate team competed this past weekend at the Pine Tree Invitational, with several students placing high in events such as Lincoln-Douglas Debate, CX Debate, Informative Speaking, Persuasive Speaking and Poetry.
"I am incredibly proud of the work this team has put into these events," said Kenneth Adcock, MHS Speech and Debate Coach. "We are seeing the success of this hard work. This team is incredibly young and to see the success they are having is exciting."
Nathan Hicks finished second overall in Lincoln-Douglas Debate, going 3-0 in the event. Dakota Epps finished 9th with a 2-1 record, while Criston Cade also finished 15th overall with a 2-1 mark.
In Informative Speaking, Alexis Alexander, Reed Garbs, Sydney Perez and Cobalt Kiser all advanced to the semifinals.
In CX Debate, Regina Murry finished 4th in her room; Haley Hurd finished 5th in her room; Pearla Valle finished 6th in her room and Deshona Jernigan finished 5th in her room. Kolby Adams also competed in CX Debate for the MHS team.
In Poetry, Lydia Lopez finished in 3rd place in her room, which left her one spot out of advancing to the finals.
"This was Lydia's first time to compete and we would've been very proud with whatever result she put up," said Adcock. "To finish third is a very strong performance from someone who had never competed in this event before."
The MHS Debate team meets Monday through Thursday after school from 4-5 p.m., and Adcock said he welcomes any student who is interested in joining the team.
