Thumbs up, thumbs down

March 7, 2017 at 4 a.m.

Thumbs up: Although recently filed, House Bill 724, which would establish a new state holiday - "Alamo Day," has already gained support from Harrison County as the commissioners court approved a proclamation declaring March 6, 2017, as "Alamo Memorial Day" in the county. The proclamation was requested by the Harrison County Historical Commission in remembrance of the Alamo defenders who died on March 6, 1836 for the independence of the state. We are glad the county is proactively supporting such a remembrance of state history.

Thumbs down: East Texas Baptist University head football coach Scotty Walden has resigned his position to become an inside wide receivers coach at the University of Southern Mississippi. Walden coached at ETBU for four years and was the head coach for one year. ETBU will miss this valued coach. We wish him luck at Southern Miss.

Thumbs up: Wiley College staff and students got an up close look at state and local government in action recently as they visited both the state Capitol and the U.S. Capitol to meet with President Donald Trump. Wiley College's A Cappella Choir sang in Austin for both the Texas Legislative Black Caucus' annual breakfast held at the Austin Hilton hotel. The choir also performed at the capitol's rotunda area. Wiley College President Haywood Strickland joined 31 other Historically Black Colleges and Universities presidents at the White House to meet with President Donald Trump about his recent executive order concerning HBCUs.

Thumbs up: Marshall ISD broke ground Friday on what will be the new kindergarten wing at the site of Sam Houston Middle School. The current middle school campus will be transformed by August into a kindergarten through fifth-grade STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) Academy. South Marshall STEM Academy students will be transferred to the new site. This is the beginning of the final phase of the Legacy 2017 bond program and it is good to see the light at the end of the tunnel.

Thumbs up: Author Denzel Holmes hosted a sell out book signing at the Jefferson Carnegie library in Jefferson recently. About 50 people turned out to the library to meet Holmes and hear him speak about his most recent novel "Big Cypress."

Thumbs up: "Uncertain," a movie filmed and centered on Caddo Lake and life there premiered Monday in Marshall to sold out theaters. This has been an exciting venture from the beginning and we are glad local audiences now have a chance to see it.
