Marshall Mavericks fall, 41-7, to Longview Lobos

LONGVIEW - After jumping to an early 7-0 lead, the Marshall Mavericks saw the Longview Lobos score 41 unanswered points to seal up the 41-7 win on Friday night at Lobo Stadium in the 107th meeting between the two teams.

With the loss, the Mavs fall to 0-2 on the season as the Lobos advance to 2-0.

Marshall passed for 158 yards and ran for 97 for a total of 255 yards and 14 first downs on the night. Sophomore quarterback J.J. Green went 11-of-29 for 158 yards, one touchdown and one interception. He also ran 15 times for 39 yards. He connected with Tahj Washington four times for 84 yards and one touchdown.

The Lobos came away with 469 yards total offense, with 157 of those coming through the air and 312 coming on the ground and finished with 24 first downs. Jordan Lawson led the passing attack by going 5-of-9 for 132 yards and one touchdown.

Jessie Anderson had 12 carries for 91 yards and two touchdowns. Jason Roundtree rushed for 74 yards on three carries and Jaquan Edwards had 10 carries for 39 yards and one touchdown.

Tight end Jaylin Brown had one catch for a 67-yard touchdown.

Marshall drew first blood on their second possession. Green connected with Washington a 40-yard touchdown pass. Jacob Suarez tacked on the extra point to make it 7-0 with eight minutes left in the first quarter.

It only took one offense play for the Lobos to respond. Jessie Anderson took it to the house from 45 yards out. Chris Kessler tied the game with the extra point, making it 7-7 with 7:36 remaining in the opening quarter.

Kessler gave the Lobos their first lead of the game with a 39-yard field goal, making it 10-7 with 2:22 left in the first quarter.

Kessler nailed his second field goal, this one coming from 35 yards out, giving the Lobos a 13-7 lead with 8:22 to play in the second quarter.

An eight play, 81-yard drive was capped off by Anderson punching it into the end zone from a yard out to spread Longview's lead to 20-7 with 3:29 left in the first half.

Lawson then connect with Brown for a 67-yarder. That spread Longview's lead to 27-7 with 5:06 left in the third quarter.

The third quarter saw Longview return to the end zone with 35 seconds shown on the clock as Carter punched it in from two yards to make it 34-7.

The final touchdown came at the 2:59-mark in the fourth quarter. Edwards took it in from six yards out for the final points of the game, making it 41-7.

Marshall will return to action Friday when it plays host to the Shadow Creek Sharks. The Lobos will be home for the third straight week when they host the South Oak Cliff Bears.
