JEFFERSON — Chocolate lovers will soon have a chance to indulge and sample some of the best homemade chocolate in the area, while also enjoying live music and the chance to support Jefferson’s Opera House Theatre Players during their first fundraiser of the year, “Chocolate Sunday.”
“The sweetest Sunday of the year,” as organizer Marcia Thomas calls it, is set for 1 p.m. on Feb. 16 at Enoch’s Wine and Coffee House in Jefferson.
The public is invited to attend the event at 2 p.m. with a $12 donation at the door.
“This is one of the very few fundraisers we do every year,” Thomas said on Friday. “Everyone enjoys this event because who doesn’t love chocolate?”
Contestants who want to try their hand at making the best chocolate can enter their recipes and samples for free.
“We don’t have an entry free and it doesn’t matter if you’re a professional cook, a home cook or just a sometimes cook. Everyone is invited to enter,” Thomas said.
A professional baker will serve as this year’s judge and first, second and third place prizes will be awarded to the top three best chocolate entries.
The judging will be based on taste and presentation.
“If it looks wonderful and tastes wonderful, it’s a winner. Once the judging is done, everyone can grab a plate and try out all the chocolate,” Thomas said.
Hallsville entertainer Riley Cox, 9, will provide live music entertainment throughout the event.
“People can make donations to Riley during his performances. He will be performing some Elvis songs and he does a great impression of Jerry Lee Lewis,” she said. “He is just incredible on the keyboard.”
Thomas said Marion County Judge Leward LaFleur will present the top three chocolate makers their trophies.
“This is just a fun thing to do, with great entertainment provided while the judges make their selections for first, second and third places.”
The Jefferson Opera House Theatre Players is a community theatre group now in its 31st year of continuous live theatre productions.
Chocolate entries can be either a cake, pie or liquid form.
“Anything chocolate is acceptable,” Thomas said. “Entries should be at Enoch’s Wine and Coffee Bar at 1 p.m. the day of the event.”
