Market on the Square got off to a busy start for its 2019 season Saturday in downtown Marshall as families turned out for deals on fresh, home-grown fruits, vegetables, flowers and craft items.
The market kicked off Saturday’s festivities with a ribbon cutting with the Greater Marshall Area Chamber of Commerce.
Market on the Square will now take place from 7 a.m. to noon every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday through mid-November at Telegraph Park in front of the Historic Harrison County Courthouse on Washington Ave.
In addition to the new flower market this year, live music from the Monday Night Pickers serenaded market goers on Saturday.
Market on the Square is a partnership between the Harrison County Farmers Market (HCFM) and the Marshall Main Street Program.
“We are excited about our move to Telegraph Park,” said Marshall Main Street’s Rachel Skowronek. “We all know the upcoming months in Texas can get hot, so we are seeking some shade.”
“This location will strengthen the ties between our downtown businesses and our market vendors as we get closer in proximity,” she added. “(It) also offers amenities to our guests as there is grass to play on, a water fountain for leashed pets and their owners, and a closer proximity to the public restrooms.”
Market goers can purchase fresh, locally-grown produce from their fellow community members, in addition to plants, honey, jams and jellies, flowers, breads and more.
In addition to edible items, craft vendors booths include goods such as goat’s milk soap, lotion, salves and bath bombs, book signings with local authors, jewelry, lawn art, home-grown succulent arrangements, custom vinyl creations and more.
All market items are produced and packaged following the Texas Cottage Food Laws.
The Marshall Main Street Program is sponsoring educational children’s crafts and community contests at the market. “How Does Your Garden Grow?” is set for June 8, “All About Bee’s!” on July 13, and “Make Your Own Market Bag!” on Aug. 10.
The season will also carry the tradition of “Best Homemade Pie” and “Best Homemade Cookie” contests on June 8 and July 13. Pick up a fan from any market vendor or the Main Street office at 211 N. Washington St. to save the dates.
