The city of Marshall’s health inspections office closed down the Sonic Drive-In at 901 E. Grand Ave. (US Highway 80) on Friday, May 17, due to health code violations.

“They were shut down for multiple health code violations by our health department,” city spokesperson Cory Smith told the News Messenger on Tuesday. “The owners of that establishment would have to take necessary steps to rectify those until they are able to open the establishment.

“Once they take those steps, our health enforcement officer will go back and re-inspect, and if they have those problems rectified then they’ll be issued a certificate to be able to open back up,” said Smith.

Smith did not confirm what the violations were; however, Tuesday, Orkin Pest Control vans were parked at the Sonic location.

Smith informed that a Freedom of Information (FOI) request would need to be filed to obtain specific details and reasons for the violations. The News Messenger has emailed an FOI request to the city to get specifics.

“They will not be able to reopen until they correct the violations and pass a reinspection,” Smith reiterated regarding the business.
