East Texas Baptist University men’s track and field student-athlete Zack Biles competed on Saturday at the NCAA Division III National Track and Field Championships in the pole vault taking place in Ohio. He is the second student-athlete to compete at the national meet from ETBU as Cody Blankenship participated in 2016.

Biles cleared 15’1” on his first attempt of the day coming in at that height. He then had three attempts at 15’7” in which he did not clear ending his time in the pole vault. With this 15’1” height, he finished 13th overall out of 20 participants.

He had the second best finish for an American Southwest Conference participant behind LeTourneau University’s Austin Parrish who came in fifth place. Biles finished in front of LeTourneau’s Jack Miller (17th place; 15’1”) and Alex Hindman (no height).

The NCAA Division III Track and Field Championships took place in Geneva, Ohio, hosted by the University of Mount Union.


History was made on Friday as East Texas Baptist University women’s track and field student-athlete Tia Steen-Baker competed in the 100 meter dash at the NCAA Division III National Track and Field Championships. She is the first female student-athlete from ETBU to participate in the national meet.

Steen-Baker was amongst the best and fastest runners in the nation for the 100 meter dash. She ran in the first heat on Friday for the preliminaries in lane five against runners that had competed at the indoor and outdoor national championships before.

In the heat, Steen-Baker ran a 12.34 finishing seventh in the heat. Her time then put her 21st out of 22 runners. She was the only American Southwest Conference student-athlete in the event and one of two from Texas. Texas Lutheran University’s Ashley Myers came in 22nd with a time of 12.38.

The NCAA Division III Track and Field Championships took place in Geneva, Ohio, hosted by the University of Mount Union.


Three members of the East Texas Baptist University baseball team have been named to the 2019 American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA)/Rawlings All-West Region Team.

Casey Combs (Player of the Year, First Team), Seth Mikeska (First Team), and Landen Barns (Third Team). ETBU tied for the most American Southwest Conference members on the team with three and two on the first team.

Combs continues to rack up major awards for his senior season being named the West Position Player of the Year and first team. This year he has been named to the All-American first team, West Player of the Year, and All-Region along with the ASC Player of the Year, All-ASC first team, and CoSIDA Academic All-District. He finished the year hitting .417 with 68 hits, 48 RBI, 13 homers, and 19 stolen bases. From March 8-23, he had an 11-game hitting streak in which he would be named to the “Team of the Week” and ASC Hitter of the Week.

Mikeska earns his second post season award after being an All-ASC second team selection. He was second on the team in RBI (42) and third in batting average (.358) while sharing the home run lead of 13 with Combs. He posted an 11-game hitting streak from March 29 to April 20 in which he was tabbed as part of Team of the Week (Apr. 9).

Barns claims a spot on the third team in the region and was also All-ASC second team. He was second on the team in batting average (.398) and hits (64) and third in RBI (41). Barns was the recipient of the ASC Hitter of the Week (Apr. 13) as he would endure a 15-game hitting streak from March 29 to May 2.

ETBU reached a program best fifth straight ASC tournament and posted 30 wins for the third time in four years.
