Taking a strong defensive effort against Belhaven University, the ETBU men’s basketball team held the Blazers to 18.9-percent shooting from the field in the first half and 24.6-percent shooting for the game, notching its second straight American Southwest Conference East Division win, 95-61. ETBU is now 8-9 overall and 6-4 in ASC East division play.
The Tigers had five players score in double figures as Robby Dooley picked up a double-double finishing with 17 points and 10 rebounds. Nathan Fontenot added 17 points as he finished 7-of-13 from the field. Spencer Cochran notched 14 points on 83.3-percent shooting and picked up four steals. Jordan Gray finished with 13 points, followed by Zach Elliot who had 12 points and nine rebounds. The Tiger bench posted 39 points. BU was led by Brosnan Cooks (17 points) and Joseph Jones (12 points).
A Fontenot jumper gave the Tigers a 2-0 lead to start the game. The Tigers didn’t look back as they went on to lead the entire game. Starting the game on an 8-3 run (18:45-16:07), Westin Riddick hit a three-point shot (17:29) giving the Tigers a 5-0 lead. BU scored its first point on a made free-throw (17:08). A Dooley three-pointer (16:24) would push the lead to 8-1. Back-to-back layups by BU cut ETBU’s lead to 8-5. The Tigers go on a 25-7 run (13:49-2:55) pushing their lead to 33-15. An Elliot layup started another big run for the Tigers as he followed by two made free-throws (12:53). Two Cochran lay-ups and a layup from Jarrell Taylor put the Tigers out in front by a score of 19-7. BU tacked on two points on a Cooks lay-in. Another Elliot lay-up (7:23) and a three-pointer by Gray (6:58) pushed the Tiger lead to 24-9. Elliot’s big first half continued as he tacked on two more points on a layup (6:40), followed by another Dooley layup, giving the Tigers a 28-11 advantage. Two Cochran free throws (4:36), a Fontenot lay-up (3:27), and a Dooley lay-up brought the score to 33-14 to close the big run. BU closed the half with a 5-4 run making the halftime score 37-19.
Dooley got the scoring started in the second half as he hit two lay-ups (19:47) to start an 8-4 run for the Tigers (19:47-16:47) to push the lead to 45-23. Two BU free throws cut the Tigers lead to 20 (16:34). A three pointer from BU (16:00) made the score 45-28. Fontenot answered with a three-pointer of his own (15:27) to give the Tigers the 20-point advantage. ETBU went on to outscore BU 18-13 over the next five minutes (15:10-10:57). Cochran scored eight points on two made three’s and one layup during this stretch. A Jordan Gray three gave the Tigers the 66-41 advantage (10:57). ETBU weny on to top by as many as 34 points in the second half before closing out the ballgame down the stretch as the picked up the 95-61 victory.
The Tigers will be back in action this Thursday as they head to Tyler to take on the UT-Tyler Patriots. Tipoff is set 7:30 p.m.
